SUPPORT SERVICES
— A COMMITMENT OF LOVE
The kids with cancer need us! Their physical, emotional and economic hardships put a lot of stress on them and their families. With your help we have done a lot to ease their pains and struggles. But, there’s still much more we can do to help.
Donate nowPSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM
— professional emotional support
Since 2015, we have been providing much-needed professional emotional support to our children through a comprehensive psychology program specially designed for pediatric oncology patients.
We have two full-time clinical psychologists, Dr. Irma Rivera and Dr. Carenin Cordero, who visit young patients at the Oncology Unit and the Ambulatory Oncology Clinic. The doctors offer them affective-emotional treatment and help them manage diverse issues related to their condition, including:
- Uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis
- Impact of prognosis
- Codes of silence
- Pain management
They also provide patient’s family members with tools to deal with grief and work with cancer survivors to help them cope with the memories of the disease and the fear of possible relapses.
Our psychologists also provide emotional support to the physicians, nurses and health personnel who work with the Oncology Unit’s children.
TE SERVIMOS CON AMOR
— caring for the caretakers with free meal delivery
CAP provides free lunch and dinner to the parents or caretaker accompanying every child hospitalized in the Pediatric Oncology Unit.
This convenient meal delivery program saves patients’ families both time and money. At the same time, it allows them to always remain close to the child, instead of having to exit the hospital to buy food and leaving the child unattended.
CINE CAP THEATHER
— feel the magic of movies
Since October 2012, our young patients and their families have enjoyed watching afternoon movies at CINE CAP. The room is set up just like a real movie theater and has 12 movie-style seats to watch their favorite films during their hospital stay.
CINE CAP provides them a much-needed space to dream and discover new experiences through the magic of cinema, while allowing them to relax and unwind for a while.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
— caring for our kids every step of the way
As of January 2018, and in alliance with the Pediatric Hospital Foundation, CAP offers free Physical Therapy services both for pediatric oncology patients and all young patients at the Pediatric Hospital.
We have hired a full-time physical therapist and an assistant to make daily visits to the hospital and provide our patients with the following services:
- 1.Treatment according to the action plan prescribed by the medical specialist
- 2.Physical therapy treatments using different approaches, such as: therapeutic exercises, massages, and electrical stimulation, among others
- 3.Guidance for parents and family members regarding the treatment and equipment used by the young patients
- 4.Recommendations on exercises to be followed at home
- 5.Informational materials according to each patient’s needs
The physiotherapist also prepares clinical documentation, reports changes in the patient’s condition, and participates in developing the recovery plan.
